Dr Alan Cohen

Alan has been a GP in South London for over 20 years; in 1986 he spent six months at Dartmouth Medical School in the US studying community mental health services with Professor Robert E Drake. Since his return he has continued to promote the role of primary care in the management of people with mental health problems. In 2000 he received the James Cameron Award from the BMA for his services to general practice.

Currently he is Senior Fellow in Primary Care at the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, and senior clinical advisor to CSIP He remains in active general practice in South London.

Alan has published and worked on the place of primary care services in the delivery of mental health care. For the employment programme, he will be looking at the role of the GP, and primary health care staff, in supporting their patients to receive the most appropriate and effective care.
